Plastic Surgery after Weight Loss – Five Questions to Consider

August 29, 2017 by Gabriel Salloum, M.D.

Plastic Surgery after Weight Loss

For many people, weight loss is a long-term goal and reaching your target weight is a milestone that can help you look and feel better. However, depending on how much weight you lose and how quickly it is lost, there may be some complications.

Upon achieving their weight loss dreams, some people discover issues like loose skin and weakened abdominal muscles. These can often be managed using the right kind of plastic surgery and prospective patients often have important questions about how this would work for them.

If you have never had plastic surgery before and you’re thinking about surgery after weight loss, you might feel overwhelmed. Prepare yourself by knowing the right questions to ask your doctor.

Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon Before You Commit

The idea of surgery can be intimidating, but it is the best move in many situations.

Before you make a decision, you should get a personalized consultation from a trusted plastic surgeon who has expertise addressing issues like yours. This way, you can make an informed decision knowing what the pros and cons may be for your individual case.

For example, you might ask:

Am I healthy enough for plastic surgery?

Your weight is the main factor that most doctors will consider when evaluating whether or not they can perform surgery on you. Still, there are also other things to be aware of. Certain health conditions or medicines can cause risks you may need to mitigate by taking special precautions.

What risks or complications should I know about?

With an expert plastic surgeon, the risk of a problem is significantly reduced. Still, no medical procedure is entirely without risk. While it’s critical to understand that issues are very unlikely, you should still understand all of the possibilities.

Will I need to change my diet or health habits?

While virtually all forms of plastic surgeon can be counted upon to produce pleasing, long-term results, your overall state of health helps determine how long those results last. Especially if you are looking at body contouring related to weight loss, be aware of the effects of regaining weight.

What results can I expect?

This is one of the most vital questions to ask before any procedure. Some people come into the process with unreasonable expectations and are unlikely to be satisfied with what’s possible. Your doctor can help you by showing “before and after” pictures pertinent to you.

How much downtime am I likely to need?

Non-invasive procedures might require you to rest for only a day before returning to your regular routine. However, conventional cosmetic surgeries require some time to heal before you can, for example, engage in vigorous exercise. Results may take weeks to be fully visible.
