How to Choose the Perfect Incision Site for Your Breast Augmentation

December 21, 2015 by Gabriel Salloum, M.D.

a woman who had a breast augmentation

Are you interested in achieving a natural look with a breast augmentation? Before you decide on your procedure, it’s important that you learn all you can to ensure that you get the results you want. With any type of surgery, scarring is inevitable; however it doesn’t always have to be obvious.

There are several different types of incision sites to consider, including inframammary, periareolar, transaxillary and transumbilical. In order to figure out which incision site is best for you, we have provided you with a brief description of each approach.

1. Inframammary Incision

An inframammary incision is known as the breast fold incision. This incision is made underneath the breast, and is hidden by the underside of the breast tissue. Though the scar stretches across the lower portion of the breast, a bra or swimsuit top can easily conceal it.

2. Periareolar Incision

A periareolar incision is made around the outline of the areola, or the area surrounding the nipple. While the incision is slightly more visible, if done correctly, the remaining scar will blend into the areola and the surrounding breast tissue.

3. Transaxillary Incision

Transaxillary incisions are made away from the breast, typically in the natural fold of the armpit. The incision site creates a channel from the armpit to the breast, hiding the incision site and causing virtually no scarring to the breast.

4. Transumbilical Incision

Through a transumbilical procedure, the implant is inserted into an endoscope through an incision made in the abdomen that ultimately leads to the muscle above the breast. This procedure leaves only a small scar located inside or around the navel.

Before you make a decision on an incision site, make sure to review your options with your doctor!
